Birmingham - About the center

The Social, Cognitive and Affective Neuroscience (SCAN) Laboratory at the University of Birmingham (UoB)

The SCAN lab is a research group in psychology and neuroscience based in Birmingham, England. We primarily research the environmental and neurobiological factors implicated in the development of disruptive behaviours in youths. The long-term goal of our research is to identify environmental and neurobiological factors of disruptive behaviours that can inform prevention, intervention and treatment efforts for at-risk youths and their families.

We use brain imaging and neuropsychological methods to study the structure and function of the brain. We are also collecting data on molecular genetics, hormones, physiological activity, personality traits, and early life experiences. We hope that this information will tell us more about the differences and similarities between males and females, and help us to explain why males are more likely to develop behavioural difficulties. The study is open to youths aged between 9 and 18 years old. We are currently recruiting young people who rarely get in trouble at school or home as well as those who may have been permanently excluded from school or have been in trouble with the police.

If your daughter or your son is interested in taking part in the study or if you have any questions about the project, please contact Roberta or Rosalind via e-mail (brainresearch@contacts.bham.ac.uk) or phone (07792493733).
